Economy
Manufacturing
is without question the mainstay of
the Beaufort County economy. Over
25% of the workforce is engaged in
the manufacture of everything from
world class racing boats to acrylic
yarn. PCS Phosphate operates an
extensive phosphate mining operation
near Aurora, and produces the
phosphoric acid used in soft drinks
through out the world. A wide
variety of metalworking and
fabrication operations exist here,
and there are several plastic
injection molding operations as
well. Within just a few short
miles of Beaufort County, adjacent
counties host clients diverse
manufacturers, including
pharmaceutical, aircraft overhaul
facilities, and paper mills.
Tourism is a
rapidly growing economic force in
Beaufort County, and the numerous
water front communities have
attracted a number of families who
choose to live here but work in
professional occupations in
adjoining counties. An influx
of retirees has also had a positive
effect on the economy of Beaufort
County. Many waterfront subdivisions
have been created which are being
marketed, at least in part, to
retirees from out of state.
Finally, recreation plays a major
role in the economy of Beaufort
County. The broad rivers and
numerous creeks that grace Beaufort
County attract many boaters and
other outdoor recreation
participants throughout the year.
Hunting and fishing are enormously
popular, and people literally drive
here from hundreds of miles away to
sail the placid waters of the
Pamlico River.
It is
difficult to calculate the economic
impact of the recreational component
of the economy, because it is so
disbursed throughout the economy and
throughout the County, but that it
exists is beyond dispute.
