Accepted Materials
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
Any solid waste, garbage, or refuse as defined in the Solid Waste Management Ordinance of Beaufort County, resulting from the operation of a residential establishment that would normally be collected, processed, and disposed of through a public or private solid waste management service.
Household Bulk Items
Also referred to as "bulk material", includes household furniture, mattresses, bedding, and other large household items.
Corrugated Cardboard
Corrugated cardboard boxes should be emptied of all packing materials and flattened.
Oil Collection
Motor oil resulting from the maintenance of household engines, such as automobiles, trucks, boats, and lawn and garden equipment. Oil must be poured into the provided container at the convenience site.
White Goods
Inoperative or discarded refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, freezers, or other similar domestic appliances.
Electronics
Computers, televisions, cell phones, printers, PDAs, and other devices commonly used in homes.
Yard Waste
Vegetative matter such as leaves, pine straw, pine-cones, grass trimmings, and small limbs(8 inches in diameter or less) in quantities normally associated with residential yard maintenance.
Metal
Any iron, steel, or aluminum. Examples include structural steel beams, cookware, security bars, and frames.
Tires
Residents of Beaufort County may take used tires to the Beaufort County Landfill at 1342 Hawkins Beach Road, Washington, NC 27889
Scale house attendant must weigh tires. A North Carolina Scrap Tire Certification Form is required for disposal of five or more tires and may be found here. Please call 252-359-1142 for additional information.
Batteries
Automotive and lawn mower batteries are usually accepted at stores that sell them. Small batteries can be recycled at Lowe's Home Improvement located at:

Paint
Liquid paint is not accepted at collection sites or the transfer station. Dried latex paint is accepted. Lids can be removed from cans to allow the paint to dry or paint may be poured on to a sheet or cardboard and allowed to dry. Liquid paint is accepted at Beaufort County Household Hazardous Waste events. Event information can be found here.
Fluorescent Bulbs & Tubes
Fluorescent bulbs and tubes are accepted at Beaufort County Household Hazardous Waste events. Event information can be found here.
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste
Solid waste resulting from remodeling, repair, or demolition including lumber, shingles, siding, doors, windows, carpet, toilets, plumbing materials, decking, etc. C&D waste is not accepted at Beaufort County sites, but is accepted at the following private businesses with the user responsible for paying applicable facility fees.

Unauthorized Waste
Beaufort County will not accept or transport any hazardous waste as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
